A strange quirk I encountered when testing out the image gallery recently (the galleries seem to be publishing fine now, thankfully) was that images seem to be substantially larger upon upload using the resize / crop tool when selecting image (rendered-images folder).
The resulting file size is 200% + the original file size, for example:
.jpg 78kb > 203kb
.gif 12kb > 43kb
Obviously this is going to be a bigger issue if the user is uploading larger files (though I haven't exhaustedly tested) so would be helpful to know if anyone else is experiencing these issues.
The process is edit image > upload image > crop image > publish – i.e. not using the optimize pixlr tools.
